Prompt emission spectra from the photosphere of a GRB
نویسنده
چکیده
I explore the observational appearance of the photosphere of an ultrarelativistic flow with internal dissipation of energy (“dissipative” GRB model). As a case study, I use the magnetic reconnection model (AC model) that makes robust predictions on the energy dissipation rates at different radii in the flow. With analytical and numerical tools for the radiative transfer problem, I show that the flow develops a hot photosphere where inverse Compton scattering leads to highly non-thermal spectrum. For a wide range of luminosities and baryon loadings of the flow, this spectrum is very close to the observed prompt GRB emission. Its luminosity ranges from ∼ 3 to 20% of that of the total energy input.

Diagnosing GRB Prompt Emission Site with Spectral Cut-Off Energy
The site and mechanism of gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission is still unknown. Although internal shocks have been widely discussed as the emission site of GRBs, evidence supporting other emission sites, including the closer-in photosphere where the fireball becomes transparent and further-out radii near the fireball deceleration radius where magnetic dissipation may be important, have been a...

متن کاملSpectral and timing properties of a dissipative GRB photosphere
We explore the observational appearance of the photosphere of an ultrarelativistic flow with internal dissipation of energy as predicted by the magnetic reconnection model. Previous study of the radiative transfer in the photospheric region has shown that gradual dissipation of energy results in a hot photosphere. There, inverse Compton scattering of the thermal radiation advected with the flow...
متن کاملEvidence of an Initially Magnetically Dominated Outflow in Grb 080916c
The composition of gamma-ray burst (GRB) ejecta is still a mystery. The standard model invokes an initially hot “fireball” composed of baryonic matter. Here we analyze the broad band spectra of GRB 080916C detected by the Fermi satellite. The featureless Band-spectrum of all five epochs as well as the detections of > ∼ 10 GeV photons in this burst place a strong constraint on the prompt emissio...
متن کاملGRB 060218/SN 2006aj: prompt emission from inverse-Compton scattering of shock breakout thermal photons
The γ-ray burst (GRB) 060218/SN 2006aj is a peculiar event, with the second lowest redshift, low luminosity, long duration, chromatic lightcurve features, and in particular, the presence of a thermal component in the X-ray and UVoptical spectra. Thanks to detailed temporal and spectral coverage of the Swift observatory, the abundant data allow the GRB prompt emission to be modelled in great det...
